#a13 :: Orangeheads

022608.jpgCandy means so many things: Sugar, and youth, sildenafil fat, visit this humor, addiction, flavor, joy.

Ferrara Pan figured out it also means color, and has been firing hard, bright little spheres at sweet teeth since 1900.

Brick-red Atomic Fireballs. Yellow Lemonheads. The more obscure (and impossible-to-find) Grapeheads, Appleheads, and the loudest of the group, Orangeheads …

For the record, I’m not a paid shill, merely a stockholder-by-experience.

I have personally helped keep the multicolored pellet-rain hammering since I first stuck an Atomic Fireball in my mouth at age, probably, 5. I near killed myself enduring the peppery skin but by God, I got  to the sweet, tooth-shattering jawbreaker inside.

Hooked. For. Life.

By penniesworth, by fistfuls, by box upon tangy box, I helped build that MIGHTY, CHEWABLE EMPIRE, AND …

Sorry. Drooling.

But what does it all mean?

The word “pan” in the company name indicates that some of the candy we make is “panned”. This process involves building candy pieces from single units, such as grains of sugar, nuts or candy centers, tossing them in revolving pans while adding the flavor, color and other candy ingredients. This process continues until the pieces become the desired size. Finally, the candy gets a high polish with an edible vegetable wax, which gives it an attractive appearance. You can view this process on our virtual tours of How Panned Candy Is Made“.

A candy genre. Who knew.

Finding ’em online is easier than tracking them down in the stores. It just leads to such an overabundance of my first paragraph.

You have been warned.
